| Exercise Eases Digestion Problems in the Obese Physical activity and a healthy diet could help obese people reduce gastrointestinal (GI) problems such as stomach pain, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. That's the conclusion of a new study in the latest issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Diet Soda Study Creates Weight-Loss Controversy New research is showing that diet soda you're drinking to lose weight may actually be causing you to gain weight instead. Diet soda may be fizzing with trouble for your waist line. Registered dietician Laurie Meyer, "Diet sodas came into being to help us lose weight and in fact they actually are causing some people to gain weight." The latest study tracked 1,500 soda drinkers for eight years. In the regular soda group, 47 percent became overweight in that time. In the diet soda group, 57 percent became overweight. Read on... |

| Research Finds Fiber Good for Blood Pressure Bulking up on high-fiber foods can ease elevated blood pressure, say Tulane University researchers. They analyzed 25 clinical trials involving 1,500 men and women. Among those with hypertension, getting an extra 7 to 19 g of fiber a day cut systolic pressure (the upper number) by an average 5.95 points and diastolic pressure (the lower number) by 4.2 points in 8 weeks. | Green Tea Ingredient Prevents Alzheimer's-Like Brain Damage In Mice Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) have found that green tea may offer another potential health benefit—protecting the brain against the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. In an article published September 21 in the Journal of Neuroscience, USF researchers report that a component of green tea prevented Alzheimer's-like damage in the brains of mice genetically programmed to develop the neurodegenerative disease process. The component, called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), is a major antioxidant in green tea and has been widely studied for its reported protection against certain cancers. Read on... |

| Sunlight Exposure May Help Prevent Periodontal Disease As the days get shorter and colder, it gets harder to spend time in the sun, and that's probably bad for your teeth. According to an article in the Journal of Periodontology from a researcher at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, our teeth may be light-sensitive, at least indirectly. "Calcium and vitamin D are important to oral health," says Charles F. Hildebolt, D.D.S., Ph.D., associate professor of radiology at Washington University's Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology and author of the paper. "The best way to get calcium is through the diet, but we need vitamin D to regulate calcium, and it's hard to eat enough foods rich in vitamin D to meet that need.
