Safeguard Organic Standards - Take Action
After 35 years of hard work, the U.S. organic community has built up a multi-billion dollar
alternative to industrial agriculture, based upon strict organic standards and organic community
control over modification to these standards.

Exercise Eases Digestion Problems in the Obese
Physical activity and a healthy diet could help obese people reduce
gastrointestinal (GI) problems such as stomach pain, diarrhea and
irritable bowel syndrome.  That's the conclusion of a new study in the latest
issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The study of 1,801 men and women found that obese people who got
some form of physical activity were less likely to suffer GI problems than
inactive obese people.

Diet Soda Study Creates Weight Loss Controversy Diet Soda Study Creates Weight-Loss Controversy
New research is showing that diet soda you're drinking to lose weight may
actually be causing you to gain weight instead.

Research Finds Fiber Good for Blood Pressure
Bulking up on high-fiber foods can ease elevated blood pressure, say
Tulane University researchers. They analyzed 25 clinical trials involving
1,500 men and women. Among those with hypertension, getting an
extra 7 to 19 g of fiber a day cut systolic pressure (the upper number)
by an average 5.95 points and diastolic pressure (the lower number)
by 4.2 points in 8 weeks.

Green Tea Ingredient Prevents Alzheimer's-Like Brain Damage In Mice
Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) have found that green tea may offer another
potential health benefit—protecting the brain against the ravages of Alzheimer's disease.

In an article published September 21 in the Journal of Neuroscience, USF researchers report
that a component of green tea prevented Alzheimer's-like damage in the brains of mice
genetically programmed to develop the neurodegenerative disease process. The component,
called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), is a major antioxidant in green tea and has been
widely studied for its reported protection against certain cancers.

Sunlight Exposure May Help Prevent Periodontal Disease
As the days get shorter and colder, it gets harder to spend time in the sun, and that's probably
bad for your teeth. According to an article in the Journal of Periodontology from a researcher at
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, our teeth may be light-sensitive, at least
indirectly.

"Calcium and vitamin D are important to oral health," says Charles F. Hildebolt, D.D.S., Ph.D.,
associate professor of radiology at Washington University's Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology
and author of the paper. "The best way to get calcium is through the diet, but we need vitamin D
to regulate calcium, and it's hard to eat enough foods rich in vitamin D to meet that need. The
best source of vitamin D is sunshine."

Now, large corporations, such as Kraft, Wal-Mart, & Dean Foods--aided and
abetted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and members of the
Organic Trade Association, are moving to lower organic standards by allowing
Bush appointees in the USDA National Organic Program to approve a broad list of
synthetic ingredients and processing aids that would be allowed in organic
production. Even worse these proposed regulatory changes will reduce future
public discussion and input and take away the National Organic Standards
Board
's (NOSB) traditional lead jurisdiction in setting standards. What this
means, in blunt terms. is that USDA bureaucrats and industry lobbyists, not
consumers, will have near total control over what can go into organic foods and
products.
